[News] The Straits Time Review on Singapore Kpop Night

Bias much? Totally Big Bang biased.

Korean boy bands The Boss, ZE:A and Infinite showed off their potential with synchronised sleep dance moves that came across a little too rehearsed.

Too rehearsed? What does that mean? Their dance steps were too neat + in sync? I guess it may be better if they were totally messy + not in sync when they danced. -_-

Their songs such as Oh!, Gee, and Genie were almost beside the point. Their pitch was off - not that it mattered to the owners of innumerable cameras whose flashes went into overdrive for as long as the girls were on stage.

Pitch off? I didn't go for the concert, but from the fancams, they didn't sound off pitched. And do I have to mention it? SooYoung's in-ears were totally not working throughout their 3-4 songs and she kept pointing to it throughout the performance but I don't think the sound people fixed that at all. To add on, I don't think SNSD had much time to rehearse before the concert since their schedule were insanely packed. They touched down only a few hrs before the concert.

Then they were gone and chants of "Big Bang! Big Bang!" echoed throughout the venue, urging the popular hip-hop Korean boyband to speedily come on stage for their debute live performance in Singapore. Their overly rehearsed rookie counter-parts would do well to take a leaf from their books.

I think it's unfair to compare them. Big Bang don't dance around that much since their genre is kinda different and they perform differently. The other groups focus mostly on dance choreography while Big Bang works the crowd easily since their song genre allows them to do so. Just imagine them dancing to Gee and trying to work the crowd Big Bang style? It's kinda impossible with that choreography.

Yea, whatever it is, Big Bang is awesome and so are the rest.

TaeYeon in Singapore [1/6/2010 Tuesday]

As expected. Fans haunted TaeYeon down in Singapore. Run TaeYeon Run! I was expecting fans to update her whereabouts and traces of her in Singapore after news of TaeYeon in Singapore spreaded like wildfire with the photo of her in Universal Studio on Monday.Sure enough, there were lots of rumors and updates of her whereabouts online (twitter/forum etc)today and I was sitting by the computer tracking all the on-goings online. Lol. Yeah, I'm too free and have got nothing better to do. I could have flew down in time and try to catch a glimpse of her, but I just didn't.

It's kinda amusing and interesting looking at all those updates. Earlier in the day, there were rumors of her at Tanah Merah interchange? Then at Suntec, then her going on the duck tour. And at the same time there were rumors of her at orchard, ion, etc. Lol. Seems like she can teleport. Yeah. Up to that point nobody knows for sure where she was and all was just rumors, but looking the updates it seems like there's a high possibility of her in Suntec area. Then came THE update. She's at the Singapore Flyer! Lol. Seriously bad choice for her to go there at that time. Since the rumor of her in Suntec had been floating around and I guess there's quite alot of fans around the area already. And being in Suntec, I thought that there's an extremely high possibility of her going for the Singapore Flyer ride and it's definitely one of the smart choice to camp at on that day. To add it on, the ride is kinda LONG, so leaving it enough time for fans to flock there in time to "hunt" her down and "prey on her". Sure enough, looking at the fancams and pictures, there were quite alot of fans there waiting for her when she finished her ride.

Somehow the whole situation seems like a hunter and prey thing to me. It just seems like TaeYeon is the prey that had gone into a shelter and when she came out, there were a flock of hunters waiting for her there, waiting to shoot her down. I wasn't there, so I may be wrong, but from the fancams and photos, it seems like after she came out, the hunters were there armed at their positions, waiting to aim and shoot at her (I mean literally, the fans were armed with their cameras, aiming and shooting at her). Seriously kind of pity her. I mean she's here for a vacation with her family. And her family is just regular people just like you and me. I mean how would you feel if suddenly an army of people were there shooting their cameras at you when you were having a holiday? Besides, how would TaeYeon have felt there?

Looking at the fancam, I seriously think that she was extremely nice given the situation. I was surprised when she actually waved at one of the camera and she didn't look pissed. If it was me, I would have been really pissed. (Actually, I think if it was SooYoung, she would have been pissed too.... Hahah. Don't get me wrong, she's my fav in SNSD. But I think she'll be the type that will just show on her face or through words directly to the fans if she's pissed and if she thinks that something is wrong and I really love her for it). People were disturbing her holiday and shooting at her and her family members. Clearly, her family members are not used to cameras being pointed at them and shooting at them.

Some may actually say that she's a celebrity. She should had anticipated this type of situation since she's a well-known star and she's in an Asian country. Well, I think she would have expected some fans and some people to recognise her in Singapore and ask for her autographs and pictures and such and I think she's prepared to gladly oblige to those requests (seen by the fact that she took the photo with that fan at Universal Studio and by fan accounts that says that they had her autograph), but I don't think that she expected a flock of armed fans, pointing their cameras at her and her family and shouting her name and what-nots when they exited the Flyer. I mean if you really want to stalk, do it discreetly! Pointing the camera straight at them is rude (especially since her family members are there too and they're not public figures). Shouting and cheering when they came out was really rude as well. WTH. It's not even an autograph session. It's a private trip which is supposed to be as low-keyed as possible. Sadly speaking, to me, the whole situation just make me think that the celebrity is being treated like an animal on showcase. Visitors visiting, looking at the animal and cheering at the animal which was trapped in the cage.... Doesn't it fit the situation?

I know that it's extremely rare that Korean stars visits Singapore and it's definitely a good chance to catch a glimpse of TaeYeon in Singapore since we might never get a chance to do so ( Singapore's market is really small and looking at those past events which Korean stars had in Singapore, fans usually have to spend quite an amount of money in order to catch a glimpse of their favourite star up close). I was really tempted to catch a glimpse of TaeYeon in person too. But what I would do if I had been there would be to just try to go unnoticed and just look at her from a distance. If the place is not crowded, then I may try to go forward and ask for an autograph or photo (if I'm daring enough to do it). At the very least, try to not make her uncomfortable. She and her family are not performing on stage, there's no need to shout or cheer. They're just trying to spend time normally, so put down those cameras! Ask for permission if you really want to have a photo taken instead of just pointing the camera straight to their faces!

Do I still have to talk about the thing about the fan flashing the camera at her face and the crazy fan who grabbed her? That's only 2 people yeah, so I think they're just unable to control themselves.... Gotta learn how to behave.... Seriously she had to rights to get pissed.

Really admire TaeYeon for this. How she could still look not pissed or get angry over it. Actually from that fancam that was uploaded (that one that was uploaded widely on Youtube where she said "please" to the fan to stop filming when she exited the Flyer), I thought that was cool of her to do so. She did it really politely but still indicated that she was uncomfortable about being filmed. But somehow the way she said it makes her look kinda helpless in the situation. I mean she stopped 1 person from filming, but weren't there so many cameras still pointing at her at that time?

Till now, I still don't understand why she chose to come Singapore for her holiday since she may be recognizable here. I guess she didn't expect fans to go that far. Actually with the ease of the internet nowadays, news get spreaded freaking fast and wide. Imagine that if there's no internet, strangers won't be able to update each other of news and stuffs and of course such a thing won't happen. Hah. But without the internet, I guess people won't get to know SNSD, Korean stars or celebrities in general as much as they do now either and there won't be so much fandom going around. That's the plus and minus of technology.

Lastly, I'm really hoping fans aren't camping at the hotel that she's rumored to be staying at (if she's still in Singapore) or chasing her around. Give her some privacy and space. Let her enjoy her remaining trip here if she's still in Singapore. Be mature and think for her if you're really a fan. And here's a video that truely illustrate the point.

TaeYeon's in Singapore!

Cool. Was surprised when I saw on twitter that TaeYeon was spotted in Singapore at VivoCity and Universal Studio (there's a picture of her there). Kinda surprised she'll choose to visit Singapore for a holiday. Not ALL Singaporeans are into Kpop, but the number is definitely increasing with the Hallyu now. So I think even though alot of people may not recognise her if she walked by along the streets, but there'll definitely be people who are into Kpop and will know who she is. Hope she'll be able to tour around Singapore in peace since fans would probably trying to hunt her down in Singapore. Lol.

BOOMZ!!!

BOOMZ is the new trend now. All thanks to Miss Ris Low.
If you're still unaware about it and what's up with the boomz, check out the interview here.

Personally, I don't care bout her English since my English sucks too. But I think the "BOOMZ" word which surfaced during the interview was funny. "Something.... BOOMZ! "
That was totally random.

Some funny clips

Another remix- which actually sounds quite good.

I didn't really bothered to check up the interview even after reading all the discussions going on about it since I thought what's the big deal anyway? But I got interested after reading that NewUrbanMale is going to come up with a "BOOMZ" T-shirt series. I have to admit that some of the videos as well as the comments on Youtube are really funny.

The first thing which comes to mind when I think of leopard prints + Khaki green is the image of a leopard in a forest. Yeah, I guess that combination goes well together totally. How natural.

With all the criticism and huge amount of pressure and attention about her past, I kind of pity Ris Low. Cut her some slack. She's only 19 afterall.

Here's a decent video of her Q&A section during the pageant. (Actually I didn't even watch the pageant when it was shown on TV. No plans to watch it either.)

[Video] Kelly Poon imitating Sun Yan Zi singing Cloudy Da

Just saw this video of Kelly Poon doing a imitation of Sun Yan Zi's 天黑黑(Cloudy Day). I must say she did a really good job of it!! Most people always fail when imitating her.

F1 Singapore

Not exactly a huge F1 fan myself, but I watched the F1 Singapore Grand Prix on TV on Sunday night.
Singapore's skyline looked so stunning. Amazing. The cars look beautiful under the lights too.

Dramas. check.
Luck. check.
Skills. check.
Cars and technology. check.
Excitment. check.

That was all present at F1 first night race in Singapore. Massa was leading by quite a margin during the starting laps and everything was going fine until the pit stop incident. The green light was given for him to go, but apparently the fuel hose was still attached to his car, so he drove for quite a bit of distance with the hose still attached to his car. That scene actually looked really funny. That basically cause him to lose his race.

So its up to Kimi Raikkonen to gain a few points for the Ferrari team and it looked like Kimi was gonna to snatch up a few points since there was only a few laps left. But alas! During the 4th last laps, he crashed. There goes the chance for Ferrari to snatch up a few points for the championship.... Not a great race for the Ferrari team in the Singapore Grand Prix.
I was rooting for them to win since I'm influenced by my bro, who is a Kimi Raikkonen and Ferrari fan (yeah, he follows the match and watch the matches online, so I've actually watched a partial match before). F1 fever have not actally caught on in Singapore and I think most Singaporeans would watch the EPL over F1, but still, I think the sport will start to gain its share of followers here since Singapore will be hosting it for a few more races in future.

Fernando Alonso was the winner of the night and just to day before his win, he was in despair after his car failed him and caused him to be on the 15th position during the qualifying. He was clocking good timings before the mechanical problem. So he thought that was the end and that he would need a miracle to win the race. But lucky for him, that miracle came....
He deserved the win though.

Should have placed a bet on the race. If I had, I'd be a richer now. My bro and dad was taking about the odds for the race and Fernando Alonso's odd was quite good. My bro was saying that can bet on Fernando Alonso and Nico Rosberg (2nd position) since their odds are quite good. People didn't expect Fernando Alonso to win after his 15th grid qualifying position too. There no point in betting for the hot-favourites since the payout won't be good.

A few more races to go. Hopefully Ferrari will do better for the rest of the races.

Elvin Ng

Old news, but I only saw this recently....
Source: Mediacorp website

An operation to mend a torn ligament sustained during filming left Elvin Ng with more than just physical scars… The MediaCorp hottie shares with us in vivid detail his excruciating ordeal in this exclusive interview.

April 23, 2008

Kwok Kar Peng

A casual SMS to the MIA Elvin Ng a few days ago for any exciting updates churned up this reply:

“Does having a knee operation n limping around now qualify s exciting”

Eh… YEAH!

And so began our 45-minute phone interview, interspersed between his dental check-up. You’ve got to give it to this English Literature Honours graduate – he sure knows how to weave a fascinating tale of mishap, agony, and the epiphany…

The Mishap - “It was a freak accident.”

It all started in December last year during the first few days of filming his latest drama Rhythm of Life (Bian Zou Qu) co-starring Christopher Lee, Jeanette Aw, Jesseca Liu, Dawn Yeoh, Julian Hee and Zzen. He performed a spinning taekwondo kick for a scene and his left leg landed badly, tearing his anterior cruciate ligament (ACL), an elastic band between the bones to limit the movements of the latter. Though injured, his physiotherapist reported that his condition was nevertheless stable and going under the knife was optional, not mandatory.

Towards the end of the filming schedule, Elvin returned to film the taekwondo scene that he didn’t complete previously and although there was a body double and he only had to do simple actions, he aggravated his ACL injury.

“I was worried before the operation – should I do it, what happens if I don’t?” He finally decided to go for the operation because “otherwise, I would have to live with the small problem for life and wouldn’t be able to do action scenes.”

Then came the crunch: “And I would have to retire from soccer!”

The Agony – “My soul left me for three seconds.”

Industry pals like Felicia Chin, Dawn Yeoh, Nat Ho, Julian Hee, Jesseca Liu and Joanne Peh called and asked after him after his operation. While some couldn’t visit because of work commitments, Joanne apparently couldn’t make the trip because she was haunted by eerie spirits after a scary encounter overseas and shouldn’t go to ‘inauspicious’ places like hospitals! (Mental note to pursue this story!) Supporters from his fan club Elvinology visited him in the hospital, a gesture that touched him greatly.

It has been one month since the operation and Elvin has been stuck at home watching VCDs, reading and sleeping 12 hours a day. He got off the crutches last week and has since hit the gym to work out his upper body. “Everything has been going uphill since the operation. It was the right decision,” he said.

“But you know what the most painful part of the operation was?” he asked, his voice hinting at melodrama.

“I had a full bladder 24 hours after the operation. I couldn’t urinate no matter whether I sat or stood because the anaesthetic for the operation was so strong that it hadn’t completely wore off. I forced it for one hour but the muscle still couldn’t work! Finally, a male Indian doctor stuck the catheter there; it was like a fish tank pipe! I was fully awake and it was so damn painful! After that, I could at last, slowly, pee.

“The nurse told me I have to leave the catheter on until the morning when the doctor returns because they wouldn’t know how to put it on again if I needed it. I couldn’t sleep the entire night… I even bluffed the nurse that I had a stomachache and needed to take it off. She told me I should carry the urine bag to the toilet; I told her I don’t need to do use the toilet anymore…

A Malay auntie nurse came in the morning to take it off. She said, ‘Take a deep breath’ and plucked the whole thing (read: catheter) out in one motion. For three seconds my soul left my body. The whole thing (read: the Ng’s family heirloom) was on fire then and for three days later!” he recounted agitatedly, and I suspect, relishing it as well.

After such an intimate encounter, Elvin was hoping  the Indian doctor wouldn’t know him, but "when you are in the hospital, you are just a patient not an actor, so there shouldn’t be anything to be paiseh about,” he huffed bravely.

The Epiphany – “Korean drama actors are so charismatic.”

Two years in the acting industry and now’s the first real break Elvin had. “I’m lucky to have had one job after another, but I only had output and no input then. Now I’ve time to digest what I’ve learnt and done,” he told us.

“I realized that very often, people wish they could stop and relax when they are busy, and when they suddenly have free time on their hands, they complain that they are bored, have nothing to do and hope to be working. People are in a dilemma. This time round, I’m going to enjoy the moment and enjoy being free. When I’m busy, I’ll be driven and hardworking rather than complain and wish I was doing something else.”

Besides reading books on acting and playing Sudoku for the first time, Elvin has taken to watching Korean dramas like My Lovely Sam Soon to find out what the big K fuss is all about.

His profound conclusion after hours of ‘research’: “Korean dramas are so different from local and Hong Kong dramas. The attraction of K-dramas is that the plot revolves around the male leads, all of them arrogant, suave, charismatic and very well-dressed. That’s the formula; the girl goes after the guy and the girls are the funny ones. Sometimes the male leads don’t exactly look very gorgeous but viewers get drawn to their characters… Korean actors sure know how to ‘electrify’ and act ‘shuai’ (cool),”

Perhaps fans can look forward to seeing a cooler Elvin when he returns from his Sabbath in June - “I’m trying to learn the good things, like the male leads’ natural charismatic air, overall screen presence and X-factor,” but Bae Yong Jun will be wrinkly and spotted before Elvin becomes a K-drama fan because “romantic comedies are just not my cup of tea; I prefer tragic epics of how humans overcome great tragedies.”

Elvin is also a reborn actor after experiencing a major turning point in his career while filming the long-form drama Kinship. He revealed, “The two years since I entered the industry was very tough and stressful. I’m not born to perform but I’ve now gotten used to the whole thing. It’s like it’s in my blood now. While I can’t say I enjoyed it previously, I’m actually starting to enjoy my job now.”

___________________________________________________________________________________________________________What he mentioned about Korean drama and actors are quite true. "Korean actors sure know how to ‘electrify’ and act ‘shuai’ (cool),” Besides the plot for Singapore Drama is so different to that of Korean dramas. Singapore seldom produce idol dramas, so those characters in Singapore dramas are not really dashing and "cool" like those in Korean dramas. Most local dramas don't allow the actors to act "cool" and charismatic. Usually, they just act a normal guy so that may make it closer to our real life, but that may lose the appeal for younger audiences who may prefer idol dramas. Thats why many younger audiences(including me) are turning to Taiwan/Korean/Japanese dramas instead.

Well, I do ocassionally watch local dramas if there are actress/actors that I'm more interested in who are casted in the show. And most of them are younger actors/actresses (eyecandies!).

Here are some pictures of local actor, Elvin Ng (黄俊雄). Yes, I think he's really hot and fine-looking (To top it off, he has a great bod too. Haha).

When he was talent-spotted on Hey Gorgeous. That was the time I noticed him too. I thought "this guy is cute!"  The show is about finding hunks and babes from various schools (Polytechnics and Universities) in Singapore. They found him when he was swimming in the pool =D.

He didn't win the contest though. I can't really remember who the winner was, but I think the winners for that show didn't really appear in other shows after that.

.
His first show "A Life Of Hope" 活下去 as the purple haired "Beng" (Hooligan).I think that was the show which got him noticed. The character was a good one for him as the saying goes, 男人不坏,女人不爱 (Girls love bad guys). His acting was not that great on that show though. He was really stiff.

I think he'll be the upcoming Ah Ge judging by all the shows that he got to be starred in.
